March is finally here, and our 2022 season is kicking off. Water temps are ranging in the upper 40s, 47-49. March Is one of our favorite times of year to target striper on Smith Mountain Lake, specifically for the big ones. March is generally quality over quantity, as the bigger fish this time of year are very active, and thrive in the march/april temperatures. We will be fishing big baits, in shallow water. This one of the few times of year you can actually watch the fish interact with your bait, making it truly heart pounding. Shallow water is the first to warm and the first to cool, so when the heat up starts in the spring, shallow water and, the creeks/river system is generally the "hottest bite". So we are typically in the river system this time of year. Our tactics will heavily include planer boards, and mostly gizzard shad, through the entire month of march. As the month goes on, fishing really only gets better with the continuation of the warm up, and April is much of the same fishing. If you're looking for a big one, this month is arguably your best shot. With April/ October/ November being close runner-ups. Early signs are showing that this will be a good spring. Thanks for a great 2021, and I look forward to another great year. Tight lines, Capt. H.
